Today the USPS announced that they are honoring “working dogs” in a set of commemorative stamps featuring a black Labrador retriever (depicted as a guide dog), a tracking dog is depicted as a yellow Labrador retriever, the therapy dog - a Welsh springer spaniel, and a search and rescue dog is depicted as a German shepherd. These stamps are 65 cents, which perplexes me. To mail a letter, the postage has increased this year but only by a penny making a regular stamp 45 cents. There was no mention that any money will be donated to city shelters (major bummer!), so why the 65 cents price? In essence, it limits people (and forces them to think twice before stamping a letter/bill) by either making them overpay for a mailing or take the time to double check and ensure that they are using the stamp on a letter weighing 2 ounces for full value. Most normal communication (or bill) weighs in at the standard 1 ounce rate. Silly really. I would have rather seen the stamp cost 50 cents, with the extra 5 cents per stamp collectively being donated to city shelters in the area the postage was purchased. Now THAT is a way to honor the canine life that too many humans have used, and sadly abuse today and in yesteryears. As we know, dogs have no ego so what do they care if the post office puts three selective breeds on a stamp? But money going to the essential care of abused, tortured and neglected dogs…now THAT would be something to send out a press release to announce!

I found Davey dumped on a curb and covered in feces, vomit and blood. My friend Joy and I never gave up on Davey and after a lengthly recovery, he found his forever home.
Prayer of a Stray
Dear God please send me somebody who’ll care!
I’m tired of running, I’m sick with despair
My body is aching, it’s so racked with pain
And dear God I pray as I run in the rain
That someone will love me and give me a home
A warm cozy bed and a big juicy bone
My last owner tied me all day in the yard
Sometimes with no water and God that was hard!
So I chewed my leash God; and I ran away
To rummage in garbage; and live as a stray
But now God I’m tired; and hungry and cold
And I’m Oh so afraid; that I’ll never grow old (more…)

Can my dog catch the flu from me?
Most of our dogs are sympathetic to us when we are under the weather. They tend to curl up with us, or near us, in order to “keep a watchful eye”/protect us, and offer support and love. Many people have asked me if our canine children can get sick from being so close when we are ill. In short, NO. All research and data from history has shown that humans and canines are not vulnerable to the same flu viruses. We can share other ailments, such as ringworm - conjunctivitis - etc, but the common cold and flu is not transfered between us. As for the canine flu, I’ve written two different posts on that: “
Winter Flu for Dogs” and “
Canine Flu - yes, dogs can and do get sick“. So if you’re feeling under the weather, and your little four-legged baby wants to cure you with cuddles - go on and enjoy the love!

Your old BLANKETS and BATH TOWELS can help a helpless life more than you know!
While there are many dogs that spend agonizing nights, shivering and aching in the cold (in their own back yards or garages no less!) Often times they are chained by inhumane “owners” (aka: abusers), and we usually can’t help them.
Though I urge kind hearts to contact the local authorities and local chapters of animal groups such as Peta and HSUS. Peta, for example, provides as many insulated dog houses as they can in winter months to help these poor lives. On a happier note, we CAN help many other dogs in each of our respected local shelters by donating old blankets and towels. Shelters are cold, concrete cells and many are outside. Often shelter dogs are sick, injured, puppies or seniors and are not able to regulate their body heat properly. Instead of shivering in the cold, and lying their sore bones and joints on the concrete, we - the general public - can give them some comfort.
Please donate your old blankets and bath towels to a shelter near you. The dogs (and cats) desperately need them!!
As always, thank you for caring…
